Summary about Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease (Aied) in English

Autoimmune inner ear disease occurs when the immune system misidentifies cells in the inner ear as viruses and destroys them. As the immune system kills the inner ear cells, patients commonly experience hearing loss in one ear. It will eventually spread to the opposite ear and cause permanent harm if left untreated.

An AIED is very rare and is diagnosed only once all other causes have been ruled out. When the inner ear is the only organ involved, AIED is called "primary." However, AIED is classified as "secondary" in 15 to 30 percent of cases when it occurs as part of a larger autoimmune disorder that affects the entire body.

  • When the body's immune system becomes uncontrolled, it attacks the inner ear protein, causing immune complexes and antibodies to form, eventually leading to hearing loss in both ears.
  • The immune system attacks cochlin, a protein that is found in the inner ear.
  • During the immune response of the inner ear, the endolymphatic sac can become dilated.

Preventive Measures of Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease (Aied)

There is no data available on how one can prevent it as it is an autoimmune disease. But there are several treatment options which are described below.

Treatment Of AIED

The doctor will give you a drug that helps with inflammation. High doses of steroids work well for AIED, but you can not take them for long due to their many side effects.

  • Once you have taken steroids, your doctor might prescribe a medication that will calm your immune system.
  • If the hearing loss is severe, your doctor might recommend you a cochlear implant.
  • The doctor might suggest gene therapy. The new genes may enable damaged ear cells to start working again.
