Otosclerosis is a medical condition in which there is an abnormal bone growth inside the ear. It is one of the common reasons of the hearing loss in young adults.
Oto means related to ear and sclerosis means abnormal hardening of body tissue.
The three small bones present in the middle part of the ear are get affected by this condition. One of those bone, stapes, becomes stuck in its place. When the vibration of this bone is stopped, the sound waves are unable to travel to the inner ear and hearing is impaired.
A person may experience the following symptoms in mild cases or when otosclerosis first begins:
One or both ears are affected by this condition. Normally people in their 20s to 30s notice the symptoms of otosclerosis.
The exact cause of otosclerosis is unknown. But the condition is seen in people who have family history of otosclerosis. So genetic factors can be the reason behind it.
The three small bones stuck in the middle ear that cause the condition like otosclerosis.
There are no preventive measures for otosclerosis. As the cause behind it is still unknown. But if you have family history of otosclerosis, you should notice your symptoms and get your ears checked by your doctor once a year.
Treatment
The otosclerosis is treated by hearing aids and surgery.
Hearing aids are devices that increases the volume of sound entering your ear so you can hear things more clearly.
The surgical procedure performed to treat otosclerosis is known as stapedotomy or stapedectomy. The surgery is done to remove the part of the stapes bone and a plastic or metal implant is put into the ear to transmit sound from the remaining bones into the inner ear.
