Summary about Tooth Sensitivity in English

Tooth sensitivity, also called "dentin hypersensitivity," is a condition in which the teeth experience pain or discomfort in response to certain stimuli, such as hot or cold temperatures. It can be a temporary or long-term issue, affecting one tooth, several teeth, or all of a person's teeth. Various factors can originate it, but most cases of sensitive teeth can be resolved with a simple change in your oral hygiene routine.

If you have sensitive teeth, certain activities like brushing, eating, and drinking can cause sharp, temporary pain in your teeth. The most common causes of sensitive teeth are worn enamel and exposed tooth roots. Other factors that can cause tooth discomfort include a cavity, a cracked or chipped tooth, a worn filling, or gum disease.

Symptoms of Tooth Sensitivity

As a result of specific triggers, people with sensitive teeth may experience pain or discomfort. This pain may be felt at the roots of the affected teeth. Your symptoms may come and go for no apparent reason over time. They can range in severity from mild to severe. Following are some symptoms:

  • pain while eating hot or cold food
  • pain while brushing or flossing teeth
  • sensitivity to acidic or sweet foods

Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

As their enamel is thinner, some people have more sensitive teeth than others. The enamel is the protective outer layer of the tooth. The enamel on a tooth can be worn down in many ways, including:

  • brushing your teeth too harshly
  • using a hard toothbrush
  • grinding your teeth
  • eating acidic, hot, or cold foods too regularly

The following are some of the most common triggers:

  • foods and beverages that are hot
  • drinks and foods that are cold
  • sweet foods and drinks in the cold air
  • foods and beverages that are acidic
  • alcohol-based mouth rinses after brushing or flossing teeth

Treatment

Talk to your dentist about a solution if your tooth sensitivity is making it difficult to eat. Over-the-counter toothpaste and mouthwashes for sensitive teeth are widely available. If you have cavities or potential root damage symptoms, you should schedule an appointment with your dentist right away so that you can get treatment and avoid complications.

  • You can try over-the-counter dental treatments if your tooth sensitivity is mild.
  • Select toothpaste that is specifically formulated for sensitive teeth. These toothpaste will not contain any irritating ingredients and may contain desensitizing ingredients that help prevent pain from reaching the tooth's nerve.
  • When it comes to mouthwash, alcohol-free mouthwash is preferable because it is less irritating to sensitive teeth.
  • Brushing more gently and with softer toothbrushes can also help. Soft toothbrushes will be marked.

Risk Factors of Tooth Sensitivity

Risk factors are those aspects in that are part of a person’s life and which could significantly contribute towards their vulnerability to the given condition. Age is an important risk factor for tooth sensitivity. This is because research has shown that as an individual ages, his/her chances of tooth pain increase. Especially those who belong to the age 20 to 40 years age bracket are vulnerable to tooth sensitivity.

Furthermore, those individuals who like and eat spicy food more are also at a higher risk. Consuming acidic foods and drinks such as soft, carbonated drinks at a very high rate makes the individual more likely to experience pain in the teeth.

However, those who try to take too much care are also at a substantial risk. Individuals using oral hygiene substances like teeth-whitening products also have a greater chance to develop tooth sensitivity. Research also shows that more distressed, angry and obsessive-compulsive individual display tooth pain symptoms at a higher rate than others.

Preventive Measures of Tooth Sensitivity

People can help protect the enamel on their teeth and prevent tooth sensitivity by: The preventive techniques for tooth sensitivity aim at preserving the teeth’s enamel primarily. One could do this by brushing two times in a day, using toothpaste that has a recommended amount of fluoride content. Flossing is also recommended and so is getting one checked up regularly by a dentist.

Other measures include not overusing teeth-whitening products. One should also restrict the sugar content or acidic content that he/she eats daily. Lastly, if the person smokes, it is recommended that they quit it.
