There is genetic basis of vitiligo but the inheritence is complex and involves both genetic and environmental factors.Twenty-five to 50 percent of persons with vitiligo have affected relatives, and approximately 6 percent have siblings with the disorder. In twins the concordance is 23%.No research has revealed a consistent pattern yet.

The exact cause for Vitiligo has not been identified yet however a range of factors have been identified as potential triggers for this Autoimmune disorder. Genetics is definitely one of them but it is not the only cause.so a parent can pass these genes down to their children. But the inheritance of these genes does not necessarily guarantee a person will get the disease. Only 5% to 7% percent of children with an affected parent actually get it. Environmental factors are probably needed to trigger the disease in genetically susceptible people
