Asking for Self, Female, 25 years old, MULTAN
Assalam o alaikum, I am exclusively breastfeeding my 2 month old baby, will fasting in ramadan effect the quality or amount of milk? Is my fasting harmful for my baby? I fear dehydration will lessen milk supply but I'm healthy and active.
Fasting shall not affect milk flow as long as you are nutritionally good and take a good healthy sehri and iftar. You should know your blood haemoglobin and iron levels before you decide to fast.
Fasting is not harmful.. You can feed your baby.. Try to take proper calories
AoA.
1. Ramadan is a special time for many. It is important to note that there is special concession for lactating (breast feeding) mothers in almost all Islamic sects and branches. They are not required to fast (please consult with your religious scholar in this regards)
2. If you feel that you can fast keep in mind the following
a. Sehri should be complex. Plenty of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.
b. Iftar should have carbohydrates, especially dates and other rich foods
c. Drinking a lot is of course recommended, but instead of concentrating on drinking at iftari and sehri, it is better to drink regularly and frequently after iftari.
d. As iftari nears, you will note that amount of milk may reduce and make the baby a bit fussy. You may have to help manually express at this time
e. If you feel that the baby is growing more fussy with time, this may mean that you may have to reconsider fasting decision and that Islam allows this and does not burden it's followers.
Thank you.
Take lot of fluids at SEHRI and iftari
