person-avatar

Asking For Someone else, Mother, Female, 52 Years old, Karachi

My mother is a diabetic and also has high blood pressure. Recently since past few days, her foot has been swelling up. I tried asking her to walk a d exercise and take her medicines but still the swelling is there. What’s causing it? If anyone may know.

Aoa, it can be due to any trauma or any infection. You need to elevate that foot on 2 pillows atleast. You can send me the pic also

Salaam
As per history you are giving besides strict control of sugar and blood pressure, for this new swelling you should see

-is it in one foot or both feet
-is it extending up or localised only to foot on any side
-any warmth of foot or pain

It is better as it is a new finding in your mother to physically go to a doctor and get her examined.

Ok so as your answer
Please go to your doctor as soon as possible as -swelling like you describe means either

1- her other already effected organs like kidney , heart maybe getting worse which needs workup ,

2- diabetic foot which is an entity not limited only to foot as it can extend up if not proper taken care of is there

or 3- cellulite needs to be ruled out though it is usually on one side only

please take the pt physically to good doctor especially specialised in diabetes as soon as possible and until then

-proper comfortable and front closed shoes

-don't let the patient keep standing for long time or hanging leg down for long time

- strict diet control , low salt sugar free , no fried food etc.
- visit the doctor please

Hope inshallah or will be ok

Is the sugar level maintained on normal/near normal???
Get proper check up. Proper foot care.
Footwear should be checked before wearing.
Diabetes cause neuropathy and vascular compromise so that's why swelling occurs due to minor trauma or vascular pooling. She wouldn't be able to appreciate any trauma due to neurological compromise.
1. Use comfortable soft footwear, check it with hands before wearing.
2. Maintain proper foot hygiene as minor infection can cause major foot changes due to decrease sensation and immunocompromised state.
3.Get HbA1C level.
4.Get a proper physcial checkup, to pick up early as major blood flow obstruction can cause amputation.

Summary: Diabetes and hypertension se blood flow Kam hojata hai, proper supply nahi milti especially legs mein. Sensation Kum hojati hai aur immune system weak hojata hai

Physiotherapist in Peshawar - Mr. Syed Muhammad Shabbir Ali Naqvi

From Physiotherapy Perspective
place the foot at elevation above your heart level so that swelling couldn't be aggravated at night
and Do Ankle pump Ex
if it is an acute condition then icing should be done or Theraputic Ultrasound
if chronic condition go for hot pack
visit your nearest physiotherapy department for details

see u need to keep her under strict sugar level control
this is not easy to get healed itself
once it takes the face of diabetic foot it can lead to gangrene( d/t which apmutation remains the only solution)to prevent from this condition consult her physicain n manage proper sugar levels
remeber that Even abit normal sugar level can cause diabetic foot.......so its up to u all family members keep motivating her about the good control of sugar bp level .....n yuppp above all avoid injury or toe hitting all the time.... go on for hbA1c levels n rbs if rbs is above normal then go for fbs...ok ..or discuss this all with ur physician who is dealing her since ur mother met with this high bp n sugar
