Asking For Self, Male, 85 Years old, kpk
I am asking for my father 85 years of age who got minor brain stroke last year till now is totally on bed.. arms and legs has movement and can talk little sensible and mostly un sensible and do noises all the night. Depression and sleep medicine does not work. One day one night sleep and one day one night awake. Wakening period is very disturbing.. please suggest some good medicine to relax and sleep Thanks
Giving sleeping pills in such old and fragile patient is dangerous.
You can however use natural sleep inducers like Melatonin tablets 10 mg at night.
Your 85 years old father who has had a stroke is suffering from a condition called delirium. He is acutely confused and disoriented. There can be various causes of delirium in such a situation. The commonest cause in such situations is usually urinary tract infection. But even just having urinary retention may have tipped him into delirium. Urinary retention is common in men of this age because of prostatic enlargement. That usually necessitates insertion of a catheter which results in introduction of bacterial infection. Constipation is common in an elderly bedridden patient. That always makes matters worse because unless constipation is relieved, urinary retention can’t be relieved. Then there are drugs that are given to relieve confusion can themselves cause confusion. These include sleeping pills themselves. Even simplest things like lying for hours in a dark room will make an old man confused. So the treatment of confusion sleeplessness and agitation is not by giving more drugs but by finding out what is causing it.
