Mirgi means epilepsy. Commonly we know it as a major fit when somebody falls down unconscious and starts thrashing their limbs about.Sometimes tongue is bitten between the teeth and urine is voided. The fit lasts 2 or 3 minutes. The patient is seen to froth at the mouth. On coming round the patient complains of headache and body pains and appears dazed and confused. This is called grand mal or major fit. This is the commonest kind of epilepsy and is the most dramatic and scary. It can happen at any age. Usually starts in the teen years and lasts all their life. Generally among illiterate people it is regarded as caused by jins or spirits and lot of hakims, pirs and other charlatons earn a lot of money by scaring patients and their families that they are possessed by spirits. The fits can be controlled with medication but if adequate doses are not given, the fits become a permanent feature. Nowadays we have the capability to eradicate the focus from where fits are arising in the brain. If you want to consult me kindly make an appointment through Marham for online consultation as I don’t have a clinic in Pakistan.
