Assalam o Alaikum, My Cousin is 43 years old, day before yesterday at night, due to some stress/shock she stopped responding normally and hence started to act weird (not responding properly/crying loudly and continuously/ Not really recognising people/ repeating few sentences) however we rushed her to the hospital in the morning and the doctor said that it was a nervous breakdown, gave her an IV and medicine and she was sent back home. Still she hasn't stopped acting weird and continuously cries and says that her head hurts and asks questions that are weird to be asked such as If there is a birthday party today? if it's raining? I wanted to know if acting like this after a nervous breakdown is normal? And how long will it take to be normal again?

What you call as nervous breakdown, no term like this exists
she need proper psychiatric evaluation...first need proper neurological investigation and if all normal then can call this all anxiety or depression...please consult some psychiatrist
What was called in old literature a “Nervous breakdown “ is not a medical diagnosis but can cover a number of things like depression and severe anxiety but in our society it can cover any functional disorder ( in old days known as hysterical disorders). You need to consult a psychiatrist or a psychologist who will firstly take a detailed history and note the family circumstances, also interview relatives and next of kin. She also needs a physical examination to rule out any physical illness as a trigger to her symptoms. As you are not the next of kin like husband or close relative like mother or sister in whom she could confide, you may not be the best person to pursue this case.

You should consult a Psychiatrist for her as soon as possible & should not ignore this sudden change in her behaviour.
An event like this, especially in this age, can be a result of a number of medical, neurological and psychiatric conditions, which should be diagnosed and treated as early as possible to avoid further damage and complications.
