Asking for Self, Female, 29 years old, Sargodha
My daughter is 18 month old and from 2 days suffering from chest congestion and fever that is 100. I'm giving her prospan, fluace and panadol but no improvement. Should I give her brufen and ventolin expectorant? And what should be the dosgae?
before giving any medicine. pneumonia should b rule out.
1) get her examined by a doctor to confirm if its just throat or chest is actually involved (2) If its only throat, for fever continue Panadol, you can alternate it with brufen as well. Give steam inhalation. Honey water. Thats about it. Throat congestion takes time to resolve. (3) if chest is involved, then there’s a different treatment altogether
She really needs a check up and investigations to rule out chest infection. she might need antibiotic too .. Dont try ventolin as it increase heart rate. There are other safer options..
she needs paediatrician review
At her age, and especially if she is having runny nose along with cough and she running temperature of 100F, your daughter may be having a viral disease which may not need antibiotics and may not even get better on them. If your child has not been previously diagnosed to have sensitive breathing tubes or asthma, salbutamol containing medicines such as Ventolin may not help. When asthma is there, salbutamol best be taken through an inhaler or under some circumstances through a nebuliser. If a child has Asthma, ibuprofen containing medicines like Brufen can trigger an attack. In her case warm fluids and paracetamol, if temperature is around 101F or more, is all she needs. If she has persistent high grade fever, has breathing difficulty or chest in-drawing, or refusal to feed, she must be seen in Child Emergency Department of a hospital.
