Asking For Someone else, Son, Male, 3 Years old, Lahore

Assalam o Alaicum Doctor, my son is having constipation for few months. I have increased his water intake and desi ghee in food wgera but it doesnt get better. Now his constipation is getting more severe and he cannot poop without using glycerin stick. Last time, he was in much pain so we use microenema on doctor recommendation and he pooped easily. His poop is big solid rock every time and its not broken into pieces. Can you please guide me what should I do in this situation? Which food should be given. His age is 3.7 years. Thank you.

Dear Parent
Food to ease constipation are fiber rich like fruits and vegetables, specially cheeko, papaya, mango, apples with skin on, pear, peach but avoid banana while constipated, cucumber with skin on, pea, carrots.
Give him whole wheat bread or barn cereal.
Give him plenty of fluids and fruit juices.
Legumes like kidney beans chick peas boiled.
Avoid fast food, chips, biscuits, frozen foods, too much dairy and meat.
Make sure your kid is engage in physical activity at 30- 60min a day.
Ask him to sit on toilet at least 5min after meal.
As you said he is needing suppositories and enema to relieve the constipation then along with dietary modification he needs stool softener syrup duphalac 5ml at night for at least 2 weeks target is paste like consistency.

Thanks for the query. I understand your concern. Constipation as such tender age might be caused by many causes, some of which might be food related. But continuous complains need detailed history and a proper clinical examination. You have been doing right till now but your kid's complaints need clinical evaluation so that any anatomic abnormality can be ruled out.
Regards
