The patient is a known case of anxiety disorder and is tranquilizer dependent also from many years, his family had a doubt on him for drug abuse also , but when they opted for drug test, everything came out negative, how is it possible because the family used to find empty leaves of antidepressants and cough syrups bottles from the patients room every other day... but the test came negative, the family of patient are very upset because when they confront the patient he says he is not over dosing any thing and now the test is also showing every thing negative , how is it possible

Antidepressants and Cough syrups are not routinely detected on Urine drugs Screening . If you feel that he has a drugs problem, please motivate and encourage him to seek help from a Psychiatrist. Your supportive role is very important.

There is a specific duration of every drug that comes positive if the sample is taken within due time. And drug panel of toxicology do not check level of antidepressants. And cough syrups.
may be there is some problem with the urine sampling. abusers mostly mix the sample with water . plus antidepressants are not detected by testing
It is recommended that if the patient is ready for assessment and treatment of his issues then a proper management plan can be carried out. Here it can-not be commented why the test turned out to be negative. Briefly speaking, for any intervention the patient’s consent is necessary to be obtained on priority basis.
