Asking for Self, Male, 25 years old, Karachi
I have fear of losing control in two specific situations, fear of travelling in fast moving vehicles on fast roads or highways mostly in night. Second is fear of elevators, this one could also be related to acrophobia, the fear of heights. My main fear is being trapped and losing control. Please recommend which is the best treatment for me.
Thanks
Hello. . Hope you doing fine. . Related to your fear I must say that your fear can be treated with exposure therapy, a technique of psychotherapy.
it must have a reason for that .talk or consult someone who can help you with it
The fear of being trapped and losing control in an elevator is mostly related to claustrophobia. Please see a clinical Psychologist. They ll help you with introducing the skills to overcome the problem.
people who are suffering from certain phobias respond very well to exposure therapy.
Basic aim of treatment is to restore patient routine activities like driving, bicycling, sports activities, walking etc.
Exposure therapy may take 6 months or a year but it's results are magical as recent case studies revealed it.

Dear phobias developed is a vicious process. This is a fear of situations from which it would be difficult to escape if a person were to experience extreme panic, such being in a elevators. It is commonly misunderstood as a fear of open spaces but could also apply to being confined in a small space, such as an elevator, or being on public transport. People with agoraphobia have an increased risk of panic disorder.
Some psychologists can help you by giving u Some type of behavioral therapy based on ur case. Cbt and systematic desensitization both are best for phobia.Try Aura exercise Grantee results.
But beside any therapy i suggest you to build ur daily good relationship with Allah. in sha Allah your inner self will feel strong.May ALLAH help u and all of us who are suffering.
Reeducation and progressive exposure therapy can work great for you.
Reeducation is the process where, the therapist discusses the possible causes of the fear based on the answers given by the individual. Questions includes :
1. Any painful event from the past that resulted in the fear development
2. Any cases of the same fear experienced in any one of the family members.
3. Condition of the ears and eyes and balance of the body.
4. Any cases of death or accidents experienced by any family members that resulted in great amount of stress in the family member.
After the questions like that, the therapist discusses the cause and takes the individual though a memory walk. Memory walk is a method where you think back of an event and observe the event slowly in your mind.
Memory walk needs to be done for a few weeks, until you can go though the event without feeling pained about the event. The therapist talks and communicates during the memory walk and let's you know that you are safe an explains to you that it was not your fault and it will not cause any danger to you.
After the memory walk, the root of the fear will be weakened. Then you can proceed to progressive exposure therapy where you experience the fear in a controlled enviourment slowly, one step at a time until, little by little everyday until your fear goes away or you can manage your fear without being uncomfortable.
Reeducation is the first step because without reeducation, no matter how much you try, you can't remove the fear.
For example,
You throw a snake toy in front of a animal and make a loud a noise, the animal will become afraid. After few days of that test, if you just throw the snake, the animal will become afraid.
Now, next, if you walk in front of the animal and hold the snake toy and touch it and show it that it is not moving or harming at all. Then by doing that for few days, the animal will start to see that the snake toy does not poses any threat.
Then, if you throw that snake toy after few days, it will have no effect. For a human being, progressive exposure therapy is included also.
But if you experience strong fear that completely freezes you and you experience strong panic like you can't breath and the whole world is spinning, then you need more stronger therapy methods with medicines included.
