The severe cold and harsh weather in Punjab is proving to be deadly for children. In the last 24 hours, 10 more children died of pneumonia in Punjab.
In 20 days of January, the total number of children who died of pneumonia reached 172.
The huge number of cases in Punjab has led to an extreme shortage of Pneumonia medicine in the province.
According to Punjab Health Department, 779 more cases of pneumonia have been reported in the last 24 hours. More than 7,700 children have been affected by pneumonia in the first 20 days of the year 2024.
Professor Haroon Hamid, a prominent pediatrician and CEO of Mayo Hospital in Lahore, told Geo News that pitting in the ribs and rapid breathing in children are symptoms of pneumonia. Parents should not consider the illness of such children as a common fever and consult a doctor immediately.
Professor Haroon said that this year the severity of winter weather is unusually high in Punjab. Children’s immunity decreases in cold. Due to the high number of viruses in dry winter, children are more likely to suffer from pneumonia.
He further said that parents should protect their children from cold waves and avoid going out of the house unnecessarily.
To save the children from pneumonia, the Punjab government has decided to impose a ban on outdoor activities and assemblies in schools until January 31st, 2024.
