Breathing is a thing we don’t need to think about until suddenly we feel we can’t do it. Then breathing becomes all you can think about. Having to deal with asthma since childhood is a challenge in itself. Multiple precautions per day, limitations of activities in daily life, worrying about sudden weather change, keeping away from strong scents, these are a part of an asthmatic’s life. Spending daily life with these challenges is something very normal for a person having asthma, unless, it starts getting out of hands. There’s much more to it. Being an asthmatic, not being able to play sports easily, unable to do cardio, can’t work out without breathing issues, claustrophobia, aquaphobia is a part of me. Moreover, laughing more than a certain level is a no go zone.
Sounds difficult? It definitely is. But, we just learn to live with it. I’m sure all the asthmatics out there are agreeing while reading but do you all know what has helped me learn better about asthma? scroll down to find it!
Understand The Anatomy Of Asthma
Asthma can range from a mild annoyance to a life-threatening emergency. But asthma is treatable. The important thing if you experience breathing difficulties is to get diagnosed and get treated before a crisis develops. Another important thing is the Asthma Action Plan and the zones. Knowing what asthma zone you are in can help you prevent a major attack.
Asthma has three zones and you need to learn and know where exactly are you in it!
What Can Asthma Action Plan Do For Me?
Having an asthma action plan built according to your health allows you and your healthcare provider to manage your asthma better. It is used to identify when your asthma is getting out of control and flaring up so you can get the required help immediately.
GREEN ZONE: You Are In Control Of Your Asthma
If your asthma is well-controlled, it means you are in the Green Zone.
- You’re are participating in normal activities
- Physical activities
- Able to attend school, work and are sleeping properly at night
- Not needing to use your rescue/ reliever medication 3 or more times a week
If the above-mentioned points are how you are living your days, that clearly means that you are in your normal lifestyle. Continue to take your medicines as prescribed in the action plan. Understand that the controller medicines are the ones helping to keep your asthma under control.
YELLOW ZONE: Loss Of Control
During your days, if you feel that the following symptoms are occurring, you are in the yellow zone:
- Difficulty during regular activities or exercise
- Symptoms have been disturbing your sleep
- Cold or other chest infections.
- On your reliever medication 3 or more times a week.
- Missed work or school due to asthma symptoms.
RED ZONE: Emergency
Most asthma attacks are not sudden and can remain in control if attended on time. If you are still experiencing the symptoms mentioned below, you are in the red zone and you need to get medical attention immediately.
- Excessive coughing
- Uncontrollable wheezing
- Extreme tightness in the chest
- Sweating
- Breaking voice due to shortness of breath.
- Pale or blue lips or fingernails
- Anxiety
- Decreased activity level
- Reliever medication is not working anyway.
