Mobile internet services have been temporarily suspended across Pakistan due to security situation and recent incidents of terrorism, said the Interior Ministry on polling day.
Mobile internet services are suspended across the country on Election Day. The Interior Ministry said that mobile internet services are being restricted temporarily due to the security situation in the country.
A day before the elections, twin bombings killed about a dozen people near candidates’ offices which fueled fear that voting stations could be targeted.
Regular mobile phone services are also affected. Fixed broadband internet is still working. However, most people rely on mobile access.
The mobile internet service could have practical implications for the elections. Citizens check their polling details like where to vote by sending SMS via mobile services. Rendering this feature useless can disenfranchise millions.
Netblocks which is an internet monitoring company, confirmed the suspension of the internet. It said, “Live network data show a disruption to mobile internet in #Pakistan,”.
