Well-known Pulmonologist Dr. Irfan Malik has communicated concerns about a new and mysterious type of virus spreading in Lahore.
On Saturday, December 23, 2023, a new virus-related disease amid deadly smog emerged. Dr. Irfan Malik, a renowned Pulmonologist, said that the new viral symptoms include body pain, high fever, cough, and stomach-related issues.
Additionally, he said that the mysterious virus can affect all members of a family if any member of the family catches it. It means the disease is contagious and can be passed from one person to another.
He added that private clinics and hospitals are receiving 30-40 patients with the virus daily. The new smog-borne virus mainly affects children and elderly people.
He mentioned that currently, no causality has been reported in Punjab due to the new virus in Lahore.
Moreover, Dr Javid Akram, Caretake Minister of Health, said that the new virus in Lahore is highly prevalent and can possibly be COVID. He added that people are not under getting tested for COVID which is making the situation more complex and problematic.
It is important to mention here that in Pakistan air pollution has deteriorated in recent years. Lahore has the most toxic smog which is choking the lungs of more than 11 Million residents during the winter season.
Lahore is rated as the most polluted city in the world. On Saturday, December 23, 2023, it was ranked as the most polluted city around the globe with an air quality index (AQI) of 351.
Moreover, the PM2.5 pollutant levels exceed the WHO danger limits by more than 64 times in Lahore. According to WHO, inhaling this polluted air can cause strokes, lung cancer, heart diseases, respiratory issues, etc.
