Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has ensured that the internet on election day (February 8, 2024) will work. Moreover, the PTA also dispelled reports that any type of pre-planned internet disruption was proceeding on election days.
A Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) official verified that the internet on election day will work without any interruption.
Although government officials have mentioned on different occasions that the internet will continue to work on February 8, 2024, still Pakistan witnesses disruption in services and frequent shutdowns due to many reasons such as security.
Regardless, the shutdown of the internet has many severe economic consequences.
A day of internet shutdown costs Rs 940 million to telecom companies. This means the national exchequer loses Rs 329 million in taxation from the sector.
The assessment is established on the fact that last year telecommunication companies made approximately Rs572 billion from cellular services.

Last year, the country (Pakistan) encountered an internet shutdown due to political turbulence in May 2023. An official of the Pakistan Freelancers Association mentioned that the IT freelance industry is facing a loss of approximately $2 Million per day due to the disruption of internet services or internet outrage.
On the other hand, apart from monetary losses, software houses also lose their reputation with their international clients. Moreover, hundreds and thousands of delivery service providers and ride-hailing also witness breaks pulled on their daily wages and in 2022-2023 the unemployment rate rages at 9.6% in Pakistan.
